Hello, my name is Ben. I was born with a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This means that the messages from my brain don’t get to my muscles properly. As a result, I am ridiculously floppy and physically comparable to a slinky that you might find at a fair. I roll around in an electric wheelchair and have to cope with the questionable and incredibly humorous attitudes of society.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) has given me opportunities that the able-bodied person couldn’t even dream of. I have spoken in the Houses of Parliament about wheelchairs and spoken to a group of 80 doctors from across the globe at an international conference in Switzerland, about what it is like living with a severe neuromuscular disability.
If all goes to plan, I will be updating this as much as possible with insights into what it is like living with a severe disability whilst living a normal student life. Yes! You did read that correctly. The severely disabled kid is at university! As of Sunday, 22nd March 2020, I finished my first year at university, studying Journalism. This means that I basically have nothing to do! So, I decided to start this blog. In September 2019, I started university to study Journalism. Where I'm learning how to get my face on TV!
(No, I'm not shallow. Yes, there is a reason why I wanna be on TV but that'll be revealed in another post!)

Media and Journalism have always been in my life. I had my first story written about me when I was around two years old by the BBC. Since then, the media have constantly been interested in my life and the antics that I get up to (Apparently I’m that interesting…). It turns out that rolling on the Olympic track and speaking at 10 Downing Street at the age of 12 is quite interesting. At the age of 15, when I was starting to look at career paths, I realised that being a professional gymnast was probably not very realistic, so, I decided to join the career that I have been surrounded by my whole life.
In this blog I will be talking about; the funny, the questionable and really rather strange stories from throughout my life and the events that are still to come.
Keep on rolling!
